CPI(M) Malappuram conference begins

Staff Reporter

Party matters: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurating the party district conference in Malappuram on Monday.

MALAPPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has warned against India entering into any strategic alliance with the United States. Describing the U.S. as an imperialist mastermind, the CPI(M) leader said that India could never afford to tie-up with the U.S.

During his 100-minute inaugural speech at the district conference of the CPI(M) here on Monday, Mr. Vijayan said that American imperialist agenda was being implemented in countries across the globe.

“If India enters into any strategic tie-up with the U.S., that will be the end of our voice as a responsible country. We have a responsibility to guard against the penetration of imperialist forces,” he said.

Touching briefly on the situations in a large number of countries, including China, Russia, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Palestine, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Burma, the CPI(M) leader warned the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government against falling prey to the imperialist designs of the U.S.

He criticised the UPA government for failing to stick to the Common Minimum Programme (CMP).

The liberalisation policy being followed by the UPA had destroyed the country’s economy, he said.

Economic disparity

“Economic imbalance has increased in the country owing to the UPA policies,” he said.

Mr. Vijayan blamed the UPA government for failing to address problems in the agricultural sector. “Slashing of investment in the agriculture sector was a grave mistake by the government,” he said.

The CPI(M) State secretary criticised the food policies of the UPA government.

“The UPA government has upset the country’s public distribution system. The grain procurement system has been weakened… and the government will now have to depend on imports,” Mr. Vijayan said.

He cautioned that if the government did not correct its food policy, it would ultimately affect the security of the country.
