Construction worker falls to death

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A construction worker at a site on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly Old Mamallapuram Road) fell to death on Saturday evening. The accident took place at the site of an apartment complex under construction in Sholinganallur.

A five-storey apartment complex is being built by a private flat promoter and dozens of workers, a majority of them from outside Tamil Nadu, were on duty. Late in the evening on Saturday, S. Tikkaram of Sabdhan village in Jharkhand State was painting a portion of the wall on the third floor.

He was precariously perched and carrying out his job, when he came into contact with a live wire. As a result, he was thrown out of the building and landed on the ground and was killed instantly.

The Thoraipakkam police, who are investigating, said preliminary investigations revealed that safety precautions were minimal at the construction site.
