SHIMOGA: Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anilkumar has said that children should be encouraged to exhibit their talents as it will go a long way in moulding their career. He was speaking at the inaugural function of the zonal-level “Kala Pratibhotsava 2007”, a cultural competition for children organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture, which began at Kuvempu Rang Mandir on Monday. Mr. Anilkumar said that Shimoga was the ideal place for holding cultural competitions as it had made giant strides in the fields of art, music and literature. He said that there was no dearth of young talent in Shimoga. “What is required is moulding them in a proper way.” He hoped that the event would inspire parents to encourage their children. Zilla panchayat president Chandrakumar said that cultural programmes helped overcome mental stress and tension. He, however, cautioned that native art forms would be subdued if the din of the “aggressive Western music” was not kept under check. Joint Director of Kannada and Culture K.T. Chikkanna stressed the need to expose children to folk arts. He said each and every child was endowed with one talent or the other.
