State accused of ‘resuming work’ on Kalasa projects

Goa Government to file affidavit in Supreme Court soon

PANAJI: Following public pressure, the Goa Government on Monday announced its plan to file an affidavit or a status report intimating the Supreme Court about Karnataka Government’s alleged action of continuing the work on disputed Kalsa water projects across the Mahadayi.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat told presspersons that the State Government had sent a team on Monday to the project site at Kankumubi in Karnataka to collect information.

The State Government’s action comes in the wake of the disclosure by the general secretary of the Mahadayi Bachao Abhiyan (MBA), Rajendra Kerkar, last week that despite Karnataka filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that it would stop work on the Kalsa projects, it had resumed work at Kankumbi.

The MBA has been spearheading a movement opposing the Karnataka Government’s plans on the grounds that projects across the Mahadayi would destroy Goa’s environment and ecology. The river is considered as the “lifeline of Goa”.

Mr. Kerkar criticised the Goa Government for its “ambivalent stand on Karnataka’s move to divert Mahadayi waters” and warned that it would result into a catastrophe for the State’s environment.
