Tamil Nadu
I recently shifted to Thiruvaiyaru from Kolkata and on October 11 applied for a BSNL telephone connection with broadband facility. I paid Rs.1,000 at the Thiruvaiyaru Telephone Exchange in the name of my niece who resides with me. On November 5, the phone numbered 262112 was installed after a lapse of three weeks (although I was assured that it would be installed within a week from the date of application). I was reassured that broadband facility would commence very soon. But since then I have been running from pillar to post for availing the broadband facility. The standard reply I get from the officials of Thiruvaiyaru and Thanjavur exchanges is that due to “technical reasons broadband facility has been kept in abeyance all over India and they will not be able to say when it will be restored.” The BSNL has come out with pamphlets and notices recently, which proudly proclaims that “Broadband facility” is now available in 413 towns of Tamil Nadu which induces the public to book the same. They should not give such advertisements when they are not able to deliver the goods. G. Ananthanarayan, Thiruvaiyaru Hockey matchesIt was a pleasant surprise that the members of the Indian hockey team visited Nagapattinam and Tiruchi districts recently. Sadly, the visit has gone unnoticed and officials of Tamil Nadu Hockey Association and Nagapattinam and Tiruchi District Hockey Associations should be blamed for the same. Instead of taking them to places of worship, the hockey associations could have arranged a few exhibition matches which could have attracted a large number of young boys and girls towards this game. They could have also arranged for some brief practice sessions and clinics for the school and college players, which would have done them a world of good. S.Ummehani, Thanjavur Power crisisTamil Nadu has not experienced a power crisis for the last 30 years as it is now. The explanations offered by the Minister for Power will not be convincing. I request the government to take immediate steps to tide over this crisis and bring the position to normality. Otherwise, the repercussions will be serious in the 2009 election. K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam Dead man’s salaryThis has reference to a news item that a dead man drew salary for 16 years and has been drawing pension after retirement (The Hindu, August 24, 2007). This clearly shows that the employees are not only unconcerned in dealing with the matters of general public, but also of their own department staff and their aggrieved family members. Had the annual inspection of these officials been taken up regularly and the service registers of the employees checked thoroughly with reference to the pay bills and the acquittance registers, this would not have taken place. R. S. Moorthy, Karur
