Science exhibition that leaves much to be desired

Keen learners: Students at the Jawaharlal Nehru science exhibition.

TAMBARAM: The Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition is organised every year by the School Education Department for students to kindle scientific temper among the youngsters.

And when the two-day event for government and private schools of Chengalpattu Education District for this academic year was held in Chromepet recently, people were upset at the arrangements, or the lack of them.

During the district-level event, teams are selected to compete in the State-level meet to be held later. The State-level meet for the current academic year is scheduled to be held in Karur on December 16.

The event was originally planned to be held in Tirukazhukundram, but was shifted to the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Chromepet, in last-minute changes.

The venue hardly resembled a district-level meet. There were no directions to the venue and the classrooms and there was not even a board to welcome students and visitors.

But what was most shocking was that not even one single classroom had even basic lighting. With overcast conditions, classrooms were dark and students from other schools could hardly have a proper glimpse of the various models on display.

Heads of most schools were surprised and some even amused at the hurried manner in which the event was arranged.

Officials said unavoidable circumstances had forced them to organise the event in this manner.

Twentyseven teams in three different categories would be selected for competing in the State-level meet, they said.
