“UN gave validity to rights”
Special Correspondent
THANJAVUR: Universal declaration of human rights by the United Nations in 1948 gave legal validity to human rights, which had only moral validity till then, said A. Ramamurthy, senior High Court advocate and a Congress leader here on Monday.
Speaking at the Human Rights Day 2007, organised by the All India Human Rights Federation, Mr. Ramamurthy said that United Nations was formed by America, England and Russia to put an end to World War II which brought untold misery to humanity and was one of the worst disasters the world had ever seen. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed during the war, killing lakhs of people. The United Nations declaration said that “all human beings are born free. They are equal in dignity and right.”
“The declaration with 30 sections is a wonderful document,” Mr. Ramamurthy said.
