Drive against beggars

Over 200 persons rounded up, handed over to Home

Beggars who were detained at the Mylapore police station on Sunday.
CHENNAI: Following complaints from residents, the police rounded up over 200 beggars at many public places in the city on Sunday.
As many as 100 policemen and officers in the respective jurisdictions identified areas such as Egmore Railway Station, Central Railway Station, Perambur Railway Station, a few worship places in Mylapore and Triplicane and some shopping malls, bus stops and restaurants in and around Anna Salai where residents faced the problem most.
As part of the drive, police had also arrested a few beggars near automatic traffic signals at Nandanam, Teynampet, Anna Nagar, Mogappair and Koyambedu since Saturday evening.
A police officer said that in some cases, children accompanied by their elders indulged in begging.
Commissioner of Police G.Nanchil Kumaran said around 200 persons were rounded up and they were handed over to the Beggars Home as per the law.
