New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed educational institutions and the universities to include in the prospectus for admission a column that if the student was found to be involved in ragging he would be expelled from the institution. A Bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice Aftab Alam gave this interim direction after Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam, amicus curiae, said that about 100 ragging cases had come to light after the apex court issued directions earlier this year based on the Raghavan Committee’s recommendations. The Bench, in its order, said the ASG had placed before the court certain instances of ragging since May 2007 when the court gave directions to put down the menace. In one instance, a physically handicapped student was forced to consume narcotic drug. The Bench directed the Dental Council of India, the Medical Council of India, the Nursing Council of India, the Union Ministry of Agriculture and all States regulating polytechnics to adopt and implement the recommendations of the committee. It also directed the ASG to file a fresh status report and adjourned the hearing till the third week of March next year.
