Delhi caught in traffic snarls

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Hundreds of motorists caught in rush hour traffic went round in circles in the heart of the Capital for several hours on Monday evening as a huge procession taken out on the occasion of the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur coincided with a march by the Indian Justice Party.

The “Nagar Kirtan” procession began around 10 a.m. from Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib at Chandni Chowk and culminated at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj in the New Delhi Municipal Council area late in the evening. The procession that wended through Nai Sarak, Chawri Bazar, Ajmeri Gate, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, Main Bazar Paharganj, Basant Road, Panchkuian Road, Rivoli Cinema, Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Pandit Pant Marg set off a series of huge traffic jams all over Lutyens’ Delhi.

What compounded the commuters’ woes was a march taken out by the Indian Justic Party from the Ramlila Grounds to Jantar Mantar in the evening.

The roads and localities affected included Ashoka Road, Parliament Street, India Gate roundabout, Tilak Marg, Rafi Marg, Pandit Pant Marg, Mandir Marg, Minto Road, Connaught Place, Mother Teresa Road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath, Barakhamba Road, Ferozeshah Road, Tolstoy Marg, ITO, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Mathura Road and Panchkuian Road.

In view of the traffic restrictions and diversions announced for the procession by the traffic police, most commuters preferred to travel by public transport to their destinations. “Usually I go to office in my car, but today I took the Metro rail to avoid being caught in traffic rush,” said Anoop Yadav, who works at Krishi Bhavan. “Even the Metro rail was bursting at the seams with passengers.”
