The nuances of selling films

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The issues thrown open at the seminar on ‘Marketing films today’ organised as part of the ongoing International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) on Monday were eye-openers not only for film producers and directors from the State but also for the festival organisers themselves.

Participated by delegates from international film-festival organisers, film marketing agents and film producers from the State, the seminar dwelt on the nuances of marketing films in regional languages like Malayalam in the international market.

Director of Indian Film Festivals Los Angels Christina Marouda, film marketing agents Esther Devos, Chinlin, Alejandro Raj, Jai Bajaj, Manas Malhotra, Sunil Doshi, Motile Henrot and Sharon Thomas participated in the debate along with B.V. Unnikrishnan and Remesh Babu representing the Malayalam Film Producers Association. Director of IFFK K.R. Mohanan also intervened in the discussions. One of the key issues that festival representatives and film marketing agents from abroad emphasised was that directors and producers from regions like Kerala who want to market their films in the global market should be clear about the content of the film.

“If you make films which are culture specific, it may not find market abroad. This is not to suggest all the films that are made in Kerala should be in accordance with the sensibilities of the global audience, but those who seek a market abroad should definitely be sensitive to those sensibilities,” they said.
