Relief at last: Bulldozers at work at the service road alongside the Telugu Talli flyover on the Lower Tank Bund.

HYDERABAD: After a decade of protests, disputes, discussions and dilly-dallying, the slip road alongside the Telugu Talli flyover on the Lower Tank Bund seems to be nearing completion. Bulldozers could be seen levelling the ground along the 500 metre stretch while an occasional vehicle sneaks in to avoid a longer route. The Additional Commissioner of GHMC (Planning & Projects) K. Dhananjay Reddy said that the road would be opened for public within 15 to 20 days, much to the relief of the residents of Domalguda.

As of now, the residents are forced to take a circuitous route via the flyover and the Secretariat or negotiate their way through the alleyways behind to reach Basheerbagh or Liberty.

Controversial

They lost a hassle-free route to the construction of the flyover that had a plethora of controversies behind it.

Fifteen properties abutting the flyover were demolished to facilitate the laying of a service road from the Katta Maisamma Temple to the mosque near Ambedkar statue.

The GHMC had trouble negotiating with the property owners too as the latter tried to restrict the width of the road to a mere 15 feet as against the proposed 30 feet.

After initial legal wrangles, a committee comprising GHMC, HUDA and Traffic Police was constituted upon court directive. Following the committee’s report which said that the width of the road should be a minimum of 25 feet, an amicable solution was arrived at and the property owners were brought round through announcement of compensation.
