KOCHI: The Lakshadweep administration has urged the Ministry of Shipping to appoint an officer at the level of Chief Engineer to head the Lakshadweep Harbour Works. B.V. Selvaraj, Lakshadweep administrator, met the Secretary, Ministry of Shipping, to discuss matters on the bifurcation of Andaman, Lakshadweep Harbour Works and merger with the Andaman and Nicobar administration and the Port Department of the Lakshadweep administration. Mr. Selvaraj said that the Lakshadweep Harbour Works should not be made subordinate to the Andaman Harbour Works, as such arrangements would be a drag on the important projects of Lakshadweep. In the absence of senior level technical officers in the Lakshadweep Harbour Works, important projects like construction of eastern side jetties had been delayed. The administrator said that the main reason for the destruction caused to the jetties at Kavaratti and Minicoy was the low height of both the approach and berthing jetties. He said that raising the deck level of the approach jetty by one metre would ensure total safety of passengers and vessels.
