This is with reference to Collector Ashish Vachhani’s statement that the Tiruchi-Srirangam underground drainage scheme had been completed in Tiruchi. Testing was underway and the works will be over in Srirangam by November-end (The Hindu, November 20). Contrary to his remarks, huge pits dug up in several streets and by-lanes for the scheme have not been closed properly and during the recent rain the residents in the areas were put to untold hardships. In some of the streets, due to careless patch-up work, the pathways are uneven. In Ammamandapam road, the pits were hastily filled up. P.S. Subramanian, Srirangam Manhole menaceVayalur Road was closed for about two months for widening the bridge across the Kathirika Vaikal. After the road was opened for traffic, three manholes of the underground drainage system close to the bridge were projecting about nine inches above the road level. The movement of vehicle on the road is heavy. The projected manholes cause fatal road accidents especially at night or when it rains. Are the concerned authorities waiting for an accident to happen before bringing the level of man holes in line with the road level? Kanagaraj, Vayalur Road Erratic power cutPower cut is a reality in Tamil Nadu. Demand is increasing as new industries are coming up. What is of concern to the common man is the erratic way in which it is being imposed. Maharashtra is facing power cut for the last five years. But it has evolved a system. The town is divided into zones and the timings of the power cuts are announced in advance. There is also rotation. This enables the consumers to plan their activities. Minister has warned that the scarcity will continue for some more months. We request the authorities to plan it and announce it so that we will be prepared for the inevitable. S. Sivaraman, Srirangam Need for transformerResidents of Ammamandapam Ward 5 face frequent power cut. It is given to understand that the transformer near a kalyana mandapam is overloaded and another transformer at Pushpak Nagar could not be installed due to lack of manpower. The functions held in the marriage halls situated in Ward 5 are interrupted due to frequent power cuts. Therefore, EB authorities should install a transformer at Pushpak Nagar. S. Srinivasan, Srirangam Bad roadThe stretch of road from Ariyamangalam Palpannai rountabout to No.1 Tollgate is in bad shape. The condition of the road is worse near the police check post at Oyamari road junction. Further, four-lane work on the stretch complicates matters. It is a nightmarish experience for two and four-wheeler riders. Authorities must do the needful at the earliest. B. Vijayalakshmi, Srirangam Property tax revisionAny revision should go hand in hand with additional civic amenities extended to residents. Hence, the revision of property tax by Tiruchi Corporation is not proper. Local bodies should decide on revision only after involving citizens/ citizen forums and the revision should never be thrust on the people as is being attempted now. Again, equating Tiruchi Corporation with Chennai is not correct, as the State capital has more job potential, provision of street lights, rail connectivity and better roads. A.V. Narayanan, Thillainagar Missed chanceThe Indian hockey team’s visit to Nagapattinam and Tiruchi districts recently came as a pleasant surprise. Sadly, the visit has gone unnoticed and officials of the Tamil Nadu Hockey Association and the two district hockey associations should be blamed for it. Instead of taking them to places of worship, the associations could have arranged a few exhibition matches, which would have attracted a large number of young boys and girls towards the game. They could have also arranged for practice sessions for the school and college players, which would have done them a world of good. S. Ummehani, Thanjavur Rural medical serviceThe Union Health Ministry has stipulated one year compulsory rural service for MBBS students. It is a welcome move. If it is implemented, unqualified medical practitioners in rural areas will be shunned. Hence, the medical students should withdraw their strike and cooperate with the government’s new policy. N. Alagappan, Tiruverumbur Restore train timingTrain No.0607 Chennai-Mangalore Express via Tiruchi leaves Tiruchi Junction at 5.15 a.m. and reaches Coimbatore at 12 noon taking about seven hours for the journey. Previously, the train reached Coimbatore around 10 a.m. and the new timing causes immense hardship to office goers to Coimbatore. The railways charges express fare for the journey. I request the railway authorities to reschedule the train timings, so that it reaches Coimbatore by 10 a.m. V. Santhanagopalan, North Andar Street Unnecessary expenditureIt is astonishing to learn that the Tiruchi Corporation spent Rs.9 lakh for the tour expenses of 26 councillors and officials going to Goa, Pune and Navi Mumbai to study the underground drainage system there. Many roads have not been repaired for the last six years. Sweepers are not available to clean the residential areas. There are not enough lorries to collect garbage. All these due to insufficient funds. Hence, the public are much grieved about the unnecessary expenditure. P. R. Krishnan, Ayyappan Nagar
