NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Delhi police to wrap up investigation into the alleged removal of and tampering with certain documents of the Uphaar fire tragedy case kept in the custody of a trial court here in 2003. As many as 59 cine-goers had lost their lives in the Uphaar cinema fire on June 13, 1997. The trial court had last month sentenced Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal, owners of the hall, and ten others to various terms. Justice H.R. Malhotra of the Court passed the direction on an application by Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) president Neelam Krishnamurthy, seeking transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Justice Malhotra directed the public prosecutor in the case to see that the investigation was completed and a charge-sheet filed within the stipulated time. Earlier, the police in its sixth status report informed the Court that former and present employees of Ansal Properties & Industries, including those who remained associated with defence counsel during trial of the criminal case, were examined and their bank accounts’ details and credits were obtained and scrutinised. In order to establish the conspiracy aspect of the case, further investigation was required. The documentary evidence in respect of the individuals who might have been part of the conspiracy needed to be collected for unearthing the nexus, the report said.
