NEW DELHI: Sushil Ansal, one of the owners of the Uphaar cinema here, on Monday filed an appeal in the Delhi High Court against his conviction in the cinema fire tragedy case of June 13, 1997. The High Court Registry later listed it on Tuesday for hearing before Justice S.N. Dhingra. Mr. Ansal sought suspension of his sentence and quashing of the trial court judgment sentencing him to two years’ rigorous imprisonment. Seeking acquittal in the case, Mr. Ansal submitted that the trial court judge had used her personal inspection of the hall as an evidence for convicting him against the provisions of the Evidence Act. He further submitted that the judge had attributed the deaths in the tragedy to faulty repair of the transformer carried out by an erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) electrician, saying that it was as a ``direct and proximate cause”.
