CEC: steps taken to check malpractices

Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD: Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami said here on Monday that some complaints were received about the alleged “selling” of the voters’ identity cards, but the Commission did not find any substance in them. He, however, said action was taken against five persons who were said to have been campaigning among some voters in the rural areas that they need not go to the polling booths and that the Electronic Voting Machines would be brought to their doorstep.

Talking to journalists after a two-day visit to the State to oversee the final arrangements for Tuesday’s polling in 87 Assembly constituencies, Mr. Gopalaswami said advertisements had been inserted in some newspapers in Mumbai about 57 persons who were found to be voters both in Mumbai and in Sidhpur constituency in north Gujarat, warning them against exercising their franchise in both the places.

State Election Commission sources said more than 580 companies of Central paramilitary forces were being deployed to assist the local police to ensure peaceful polling. The Commission identified 1,305 of the 19,924 booths in the 87 constituencies as “hypersensitive” and another 4,834 booths as “sensitive.”
