Gulbarga: For Rahul, a student of class VIII, it has been a pleasant experience to have Padmaja Datt, a resource person from Hyderabad, to come to his class and talk about his favourite subject sports and cricket stars. Ms. Datt and her colleagues Ashalatha Rao, Karuna Sethi and Sridevi were conducting a two-day programme of “Newspaper in Education” (NIE), which was organised by The Hindu, at Sharanabasaveshwar Residential Public School in Gulbarga on Tuesday. The programme is aimed at improving the reading habits, concentration, vocabulary, writing skills of the students. The resource persons won the confidence of the students and made the students actively participate in the 40 minute session.

The session began with the resource persons introducing themselves. It was followed by a brief introduction of the The Hindu newspaper to the students.

Later, the students were given a copy of the newspaper and asked to select 10 words and note them down. This was to help them improve their vocabulary. Ms. Padmaja said that student should make it a habit to read newspapers daily. And select at least 10 words and find their meaning. This would help them in developing their vocabulary, she added.

Explaining the need for higher concentration for better academic results, Ms. Rao, conducted a mind-teasing game testing the level of concentration of the students. She said that concentration was key to success and developing it would help them keep off other distractions.

The resource persons conducted a programme in Bidar on Monday. They will be holding 50 such sessions under the programme in the school.
