BHUBANESWAR: As part of the Gurukul Project of the Ministry of Tourism being implemented by the Konark Natya Mandap (KNM) at Konark, a 10-day training programme in the unique ‘Chhau’ dance of Mayurbhanj got under way on Tuesday. Of the three prominent styles of the martial dance form of Chhau – the other two being the Chhau of Sareikalla in Jharkhand and of Purulia in West Bengal – the Mayurbhanj form had the uniqueness of being unmasked, explained Project Director and KNM founder Gangadhar Pradhan. Eminent dance scholar D.N. Patnaik, who did extensive study of the Mayurbhanj form, would guide the proceedings. The training programme would be followed by an exclusive workshop on Odissi mardal, the percussion instrument that was being accompanied with the Odissi dance.
