CUTTACK: After the beach festival, it is now the turn of fort festival in the State. Close on the heels of Puri and Konark beach festivals, the stage is now set for Barabati Nrutyotsab to begin from December 20 at Killa Maidan in front of the majestic 13th century Barabati Fort here. The main attraction of this year’s festival would be a classical dance presentation by an artiste from Israel, said the organisers. “As the historic fort now stands as a living testimony of Orissa’s glorious past, the open air auditorium will match it with showcasing traditional folk and classical dance of the country for seven days,” said Guru Ashis Das of Odissi Nrutya Mandal, which is organising the festival continuously for the last seven years. In response to massive support and encouragement from well-wishers, we decided to extend the festival to seven days and increase the number of stalls at the festival ground, Mr. Das informed. Besides the stalls to exhibit Cuttack’s famous filigree items, we decided to stage an exhibition of khadi and handicraft items, he added. The Khadi and Village Industries Commission would set up some 50 stalls at the festival site for appliqué works, textiles, ornaments, woodworks and sculpture. The district cultural association, the Tourism Department, the local civic body and the district administration extended all cooperation for the success of the festival that was getting popular year after year. Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare would inaugurate the festival on December 20 while Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would be the chief guest on the concluding day on December 26, the organisers informed.
