On cloud nine: Orissa cricketers exult over their victory in a Ranji Trophy match at Siliguri on Tuesday. —

CUTTACK: Ranji cricket players of the State are now on cloud nine. After registering two back-to-back wins in their Elite group matches, cash prizes for outstanding players are now flooding in.

The Orissa Cricket Association (OCA), the richest sporting body of the State, announced cash prizes for some of the players on Tuesday who shined in the team’s victory over mighty Bengal team at Siliguri.

OCA secretary Ashirbad Behera made the announcement here after the State team notched up a magnificent six-wicket win over the home team. This was Orissa’s consecutive victory in this season after it outplayed Hyderabad a fortnight ago at the Andhra Pradesh capital.

Cash prize

Mr. Behera said seven players of the team, including veteran Debashis Mohanty, would get cash prize of Rs. 25,000 each for their brilliant show while the remaining players would get Rs. 10,000 each.

A similar cash prize was announced by the OCA after the Hyderabad match.

Mr. Debashis Mohanty and Niranjan Behera received Rs. 50,000 each while all other players got Rs. 10,000 each for their victory against Hyderabad.

Orissa now plays next match against Punjab and Mr. Behera is hopeful that the State players would continue to perform better in that match.

Orissa is playing for the first time in the Elite group of Ranji matches this season after the inaugural season of this version of the game in 2003.

This year, Orissa lost its first two matches played on home ground at Barabati Stadium here against Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
