Encouraging the youth: Actor R. Sarath Kumar interacts with students at M.O.P.Vaishnav College during the inauguration of an inter-collegiate fest on Monday. CHENNAI: Students from several city colleges gathered at M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women on Monday to take part in an inter-collegiate cultural fest ‘Prana Sakti,’ but for a cause. They sought to create awareness about organ donation through their performances in various events. Inaugurating the fest, which was jointly organised by the National Network for Organ Sharing (NNOS) and the College, actor R. Sarath Kumar said dedication and hard work were the need of the hour to reach out to the people, particularly the student community, on organ donation. “Not many people know the difference between brain death and natural death. Several family members still hesitate to donate organs of deceased persons due to sentimental values,” he said. He also cited a recent incident reported in media wherein a six-year-old boy’s organs were donated to persons in different parts of the country after his death. Highlighting the significance of students’ role in propagating the cause, he said more such programmes must be conducted in colleges to motivate the youth. Students must educate their family members and people in urban areas, Mr. Sarath Kumar added. Greater attention should be given to people in villages, where the stigma was more. Mr. Sarath Kumar, who is also the president of Akila Indhiya Samathuva Makkal Katchi, said saving lives through such initiatives was one of the policies of his party. His party would propagate disaster management programme too. “I would also suggest my party cadres to donate organs,” he said. He was later presented with a donor card by NNOS. Mr. Sarath Kumar also gave away donor cards to volunteers. NNOS chairman R. Swaminathan spoke about the objective of the organisation to spread awareness about organ donation involving the student community to curb the malpractices. M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women secretary P. Haridas underlined the importance of organ donation. College vice-principal Lalitha Balakrishnan said it was apt that the function was held on Human Rights Day. The cultural fest, to be held till Friday, would have participants from seven city colleges. Various programmes such as miming, skit, script writing and t-shirt painting would focus on the theme of organ donation.
