A workshop to explore pollution control methods

TIRUNELVELI: The one-day international workshop on ‘Challenges for the Environment and Effective Management,’ to be conducted by Department of Science and Humanities and Mechanical Engineering, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Palayamkottai, on December 12, is aimed at creating awareness among the student community on the importance of putting an end to the environment degradation in an effective manner and take remedial measures to the already dented atmosphere.

Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, the principal, FX Engineering College, K. Sivaram, said the topic became a much-debated subject across the globe in the past two decades after the scientists and the environmentalists started warning the developed, developing and under-developed nations on ‘global warming’ due the mindless pollution of environment.

Director of the college, G.M. Joseph Dunston, said the minutes of this workshop would be forwarded to the UNESCO, which was spearheading the war against environmental pollution and global warming.

Faculty members and research students of various colleges and universities in Tirunelveli, Madurai, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin districts will participate in the workshop.

Resource persons

Ronald Henry James Hopwood, Environmentalist from United Kingdom, one of the resource persons of this programme will speak on ‘Control of hazardous air pollutants,’ and ‘Cost Effective Pollution Control’ and T. Jayasekar, Environmental Engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), Tuticorin, will address on ‘Atmospheric nano particles.’ Another resource person of the workshop, M. Arunachalam, Reader, Sri Paramakalyani Centre for Environmental Sciences, will speak on ‘Threats to Ecosystem.’

While David Friese Greene, Management Consultant from Bristol, UK, who will be explaining the efforts across the globe to neutralize the effects of pollution under the title ‘Converging World,’ K. Karthikeyan, Environmental Engineer (Planning and Development), TNPCB, Chennai, will share their experiences on environment pollution and the methods to tackle the menace.

In the panel discussion, experts including H. Syed Othuman, principal, Sadakkathullah Appa College, Palayamkottai, M.A. Haniffa, Director, Centre for Aquaculture Research and Extension, St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai, M. Narayanan, Director, Aquatic Biodiversity Centre, SXC, Palayamkottai, and S. Dhakshinamoorthy, Chief Manager, Quality and Assurance Environmental Department, India Cements, Sankar Nagar, will speak on threat to various ecosystems and environment and the strategies to counter this universal problem.
