MALAPPURAM: The district conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) being held here since Monday has raised a strong demand to counter religious fundamentalism with party ideology. Briefing the media, CPI(M) leaders T.K. Hamza, MP; Paloli Kunhimohammed, and E.M. Mohandas said that the conference raised many a constructive criticism as well as suggestion for strengthening the party. However, they said there was little dissidence within the party in the district. The meeting has pointed out the imbalance in the party’s influence in the district and suggested ways to penetrate more deeply in weaker areas. There was a demand to give comprehensive political education to the masses in Malappuram district, they said. Thirty-three members representing 15 area committees took part in six and a half hours of discussion on a report presented by party district secretary K. Saidalikutty. The discussion followed three and a half hours of area-wise group discussions. Mr. Mohandas said that there were demands to strengthen the functioning of the party district office. Delegates also demanded faster and more effective intervention of the party in social issues at regional and local level. There was also a demand to give more consideration for women as well as Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. The conference will conclude on Wednesday evening.
