Mahabir Prasad: Centre to boost enterprises in unorganised sector

Staff Reporter

India International Coir Fair 2007 draws to a close

Tourism Department to launch online souvenir shop; 120 souvenirs identified

Rs.25 crore has been allotted in current financial year for modernisation of coir sector

KOCHI: The Union government is studying the report of the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector which has made recommendations on financing of enterprises in the unorganised sector.

These suggestions, when implemented, would resolve a number of problems facing micro and small industries, said Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Mahabir Prasad here on Tuesday.

The Minister was inaugurating the valedictory function of the India International Coir Fair 2007 in the city.

The Union Minister said that the Ministry had evolved special schemes for the coir industry and that a modernisation plan was one of the programmes. Rs.25 crore had already been allotted in the current financial year for the purpose.

He called for better research and development, for value addition, and better marketing of coir products. The Minister said that coir industry should turn its eyes to markets in north, east and west Indian instead of confining itself to south India.

Online souvenir shops

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that the State Tourism Department planned to launch an online souvenir shop which would sell souvenirs from Kerala.

He said that 120 souvenir items had been identified and that they were being produced by artisans in the handicrafts and handloom sectors.

The government will set up two ‘coir villages,’ one in Alappuzha and another in Kollam, for visitors to see the process of production. The coir villages would be on the lines of the handloom village in Balaramapuram, he said.

Awards given away

The Union Minister also gave away the Revi Karunakaran Memorial Best Workmen awards to 10 workers chosen from different coir production units in the country.

The Minister also released a compilation on the coir industry by coir industry veteran K.C. Eapen.
