The Asian Development Bank is funding the project The KUIDFC is the nodal agency for project implementation BELLARY: The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) has asked New Delhi-based Span Consultants to prepare a detailed project report and conduct a survey on the basic civic infrastructure requirements in Bellary division, comprising Bellary, Koppal and Raichur districts. The KUIDFC is the nodal agency for implementing the Asian Development Bank-assisted North Karnataka Urban Sector Investment Project (NKUSIP). The Government has selected 25 urban local bodies, including the four city corporations of Belgaum, Bellary, Gulbarga and Hubli-Dharwad, 14 city municipal councils (CMCs), six town municipal councils (TMCs) and one town panchayat (Badami) for the project to help boost economic growth in the North Karnataka region. The region has lagged behind other districts in the State in terms of urban infrastructure. The local bodies were chosen based on the recommendations of the report of the High Power Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalances. Six projects — water supply, sewerage and sanitation, drainage, roads, poverty alleviation and non-municipal infrastructure — will be implemented in all the 25 urban local bodies at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,250 crore, official sources told The Hindu. In Bellary division, infrastructure will be improved in Bellary, Hospet, Raichur, Koppal, Gangavati and Sindhanur. The project will cost Rs. 237 crore. Work will be taken up in two phases. Water supply, sewerage, storm water drainage and poverty alleviation (slum improvement, low-cost sanitation and community development programmes) will be covered in the first phase, while roads and non-municipal infrastructure (Fire and Emergency Services, tourism development and lake improvement) will be covered in the second phase. A sum of Rs. 55.47 crore has been earmarked to ensure drinking water supply, Rs. 81.95 crore for sewerage and sanitation, Rs. 15.24 crore for roads, Rs. 14.75 crore for poverty alleviation and Rs. 12.51 crore for non-municipal infrastructure. Completion of workThe work is scheduled to be completed by 2012. Representatives of Span Consultants have started collecting information from the departments concerned.
