Belgaum safai karamcharis block Haripriya Express

Belgaum: The safai karmacharis of Belgaum City Corporation, led by corporator Deepak Waghela, intensified their agitation and organised “rail rook” agitation here on Tuesday.

The safai karmacharis in large numbers marched to Belgaum Railway Station and detained Haripriya Express in the afternoon.

The “rail roko” was organised to draw the attention of the district administration and the Government towards their problems and demands, which remained neglected for long.

The district administration had allegedly closed its eyes to all the people’s problems which was evident from the increasing number of tents by different organisations and individuals sitting on dharna.

While the indefinite dharna of safai karmacharis itself entered 27th day on Tuesday, a Dalit family from Bijapur district is on dharna for over six months now. The dharna of workers of Raibag Sahakara Sakkare Karkhane, which lasted for 17 months, was reported to be the longest.

Under the banner of All India Safai Mazdoor Congress, the safai karmacharis are agitating in support of their demands which include appointment of safai karmacharis on permanent basis in the police, education and health departments as per I.P.D. Salappanavar recommendations; and those who have been serving on contract basis with private labour contractors and time scale basis should be appointed on permanent basis, the congress said.
