PANAJI: The controversy over the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Goa took a new turn on Tuesday following a petition filed by Meditab Specialties Pvt. Ltd., promoters of pharmaceutical SEZ, in Bombay High Court at Goa seeking the intervention of the court. The company, which had been allotted land by the State Government at Keri in Ponda taluk of Central Goa for setting up a Pharma SEZ, has approached the court stating that it was forced to stop the work recently following pressure from the State Government. It disputed the recent statement by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat that it had voluntarily decided to stop the work following protests. It said that the State Government forced it to stop the work. The company said that it was now compelled to approach the court as it had invested large sums of money in developing the SEZ. Naming the Deputy Collector, Ponda and Ponda Police Inspector for pressuring it to stop the work, the company said it wanted to continue the work as it was authorised to do so. The petition alleged that on Saturday when the company officials met Chief Secretary J.P. Singh to apprise him of the situation, the Chief Secretary, instead of supporting them, orally instructed them to “stop the work voluntarily and warned that if the work is not stopped, the police will not protect the petitioner’s workers, and its machinery.”
