Search operation on Varushanadu hill

Staff Reporter

Movement of four Tamil extremists suspected

THENI: A strong contingent of striking force led by Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar conducted a surprise search operation on Varushanadu hill following a tip off about suspected movement of four Tamil extremists in the region on Tuesday.

They are said to have distributed pamphlets propagating Maoists principles among the people at Varushanadu.

The team has scanned the entire hill but no one was arrested so far. Surveillance has been intensified on the hill and nearby villages. Already, all check posts along the district border were alerted. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dindigul Range) R. Krishnamoorthy joined the operation.

Four unidentified persons intercepted school students at Varushandu and enquired about the availability of food. The students immediately informed their schoolteacher about them, who, in turn, alerted the police, said a police officer.

However, the police did not seize any pamphlet from the villagers.

They suspected that the gang might have either climbed down to the Varushanadu forests to reach Virudhunagar district or escaped through Myladumparai and Mallapauram to reach Madurai district.

This was the second time, Tamil extremists tried to infiltrate into border villages in the district to establish their foothold.

Already, a 10-member gang had hidden guns and country made bombs in Murugan Malai near Periakulam.

Their activities were scuttled at the initial stage as the police seized a huge haul of arms and ammunition dumped by them on Murugan Malai near Periakulam and arrested three Tamil extremists a few months ago.

A 16-member Special Task Force from Sathyamangalam has camped near the Kumbakarai falls, seven km from Periakulam, to nab the seven-member the team, but it escaped.
