KOZHIKODE: Saju Paul, MLA and Chairman of Assembly Committee on Garbage Disposal, has said the ideal way of disposing of waste is through small garbage treatment projects with assistance from local self-government institutions. Mr. Shaju was speaking at a sitting of the committee held here on Tuesday. Changes in people’s lifestyle in the State, influx of diseases and urbanisation have thrown up problems. There was a need for scientific disposal of different types of wastes generated including bio-medical and electronic ones. He said it was best not to visualise garbage treatment projects on a large scale. The problem was colossal and needed to be combated with stringent laws. The final report would be submitted by the committee during the next Assembly sitting. Demands arose before the committee on the need for stringent legislation for garbage disposal and treatment plant when sanction was accorded for construction of flat complexes. Fine needed to be imposed in case of violation of norms, it was added. MLAs C.H. Kunhambu, K.K. Latika, and George M. Thomas were present at the sitting.
