He asked for water and got lynched

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: Shivananjaiah (45), a physically challenged resident of Doddaghanni village in Chennarayapatna taluk in Hassan district, went to Nallur village, which is one kilometre away, to attend the Swamy Ayyappan puja on Sunday.

He also attended a dinner in the village. After dinner, Shivananjaiah went to the house of one Manjunatha, seeking a glass of water.

When he knocked on the doors of Manjunatha’s house, his wife Manjula, who was alone at home, mistook him for a thief and she began screaming for help.

About 15 villagers, who gathered near the house, began to assault Shivananjaiah. They thought he had molested Manjula. They dragged him to an electric pole, bound him up with his dhoti and hit him with iron rods.

They then brought pieces of wood, set fire to it and began to burn Shivananjaiah’s hands and legs. Not satisfied with their barbaric act, they threw water on his body and left him tied to the pole the whole night. By Monday morning, Shivananjaiah was dead.

Chennarayapatna Police Inspector Kumar arrested Chandru, Manu, Manjunatha and Rummaged. Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane speaking to The Hindu, said that Shivananjaiah had served as a Home Guard earlier. “We have taken up detailed investigations and a few more arrests will follow,” he said.
