Call to end violence in Kannur

Staff Reporter

Towards peace: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala leading a Shanthi Yatra from Payyannur in Kannur on Tuesday.

PAYYANNUR: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is organising a Shanthi Yatra (peace march) from here to ensure peace to all people, including Communist party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) workers, in the district.

Mr. Chandy was speaking at Pilathara, near here, at a reception to the foot march, which he, along with KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, is leading from here to Thalassery to spread messages of peace against what the Congress calls attempts by the CPI(M) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to revive political violence in the district.

Though the march was inaugurated by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting Priyaranjan Dasmunsi here on Monday, it began here on Tuesday morning.

Hundreds of party workers and State-level leaders participated in the march that would conclude at Thalassery on Thursday.

To save lives

Mr. Chandy said that political violence in the district had been put to an end during the previous United Democratic Front rule. The end of violence could save many lives, including those of CPI(M) workers. The Congress could not allow attempts to make the district a killing field, he said adding that mothers of CPI(M) workers in the district would support the march.

The large turnout of Congress workers to participate in the march was a display of the party workers’ resolve that they could not be intimidated by use of violence by the CPI(M), he added.
