DFO suspended

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government has suspended from service Indian Forest Service officer N. Balakrishna Pillai who had reported the land earmarked for transfer to the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) at Ponmudi as ‘forests.’

Mr. Pillai had given such a report to the Forest Department in his capacity as the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Thiruvananthapuram. Meanwhile, various environmental organisations have sought a judicial enquiry into issues related to the acquisition of land for the institute at Ponmudi. The members of these organisations, who visited the proposed site for the IIST at Maruthuamala near Ponmudi, said the inquiry should cover allocation of forests for the institute at Maruthuamala and the deal connected with Merchiston Estate.

Poet Sugathakumari, who led the group, said the government should take a strong stand and should not allow any construction on Ponmudi hills.
