Schoolgirl dies of brain fever

TUMKUR: A schoolgirl died reportedly of brain fever in Koratagere in Tumkur district on Tuesday.

Koratagere Taluk Panchayat president Ravikumar told presspersons that Nagaratna (14), who was studying in Standard VIII at the Government High School in Koratagere, developed symptoms of brain fever. She was staying in Government hostel. She was admitted to a private nursing home.

Mr. Ravikumar said her father, Narasimha Murthy of Chimpugana Halli, however, forcibly took his daughter home. He wanted to treat her at home with native medicines. Nagaratna died in the afternoon. Doctors at the nursing home said the girl was responding to treatment at the time of her discharge. “It was pity that her father took her away,” they said.

Bear attack

A boy was attacked by a bear near his house in Gowdaganahalli, near here, on Tuesday.

The animal caused grievous injuries on his head and shoulders before the people chased it away.

The villagers said that officials of the Forest Department were not taking action though it was the tenth such incident in the village during the past five months.

The bears, they said, came from the forest plantations of Chikka Thotlukere area.

Forest officials were not available for comment.
