Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday closed a writ petition seeking an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged financial irregularities in buying spices and essential commodities by the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco). The Bench, comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice K.M. Joseph, closed the petition in view of the fact that the investigating agency had inquired into the allegations and filed a progress report in a sealed cover before the court. The petition, filed by the Idukki-based Jayaprakash Cultural Centre president, K.N. Vijayan, said though a judicial commission appointed by the government had found irregularities in dealings made from 1995 to 2006, the commission had recommended a CBI inquiry only into those from 2001 to 2006. In fact, the government decided to ask the CBI to investigate the dealings from 2001 to 2006 on the ground that the commission did not find any irregularities in those that took place before 2001. The CBI had investigated the 1995-2006 dealings following a directive from the court. Notice to StateActing on a contempt petition filed by the Arunachal Pradesh government and its lottery agent, the Bench issued notice to the State government and the Deputy Commercial Tax Commissioner. The petition alleged that despite a court directive to receive advance tax and grant registration to its agent, the government and other respondents failed to comply with the directions. The action of the respondents amounted to contempt of court.
