Corrections and clarifications

  • The first paragraph in a report “Tributes paid to Rajaji” (December 11, 2007) was: “Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee paid floral tributes at the portrait of C. Rajagopalachari, first Governor-General of Independent India, in the Central Hall of Parliament House here on Monday, on the occasion of his 128th birthday.” It should have been the first Indian Governor-General of Independent India. (The first Governor-General of Independent India, and the last Viceroy of India, was Lord Mountbatten. The second Governor-General of Independent India was Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari.)

  • An item “Election observer” (Karnataka edition – Bangalore, December 8, 2007, page 4) was “The Chief Electoral Officer of Orissa, Alka Panda, who has been appointed Election Observer for Karnataka by the Chief Election Commission, will arrive here [in Belgaum] on December 10 ….” It should have been the “Election Commission of India”.

  • The first paragraph in a report “Helicopter deal: fresh request for proposal soon” (December 7, 2007) was: “The Union government preferred the safer option of cancelling the tender for 200 helicopters after the two-way fight for the Rs.1,700-crore order turned vicious.” It should have been Rs. 17,000-crore order, as mentioned in the page 1 story (December 7, 2007) “Tender for helicopters scrapped”. (The report said that each helicopter was estimated to cost between Rs.85 crore and Rs.90 crore.)

  • In a report “‘Disabled will showcase their music talents if given opportunity’” (Tamil Nadu editions, December 8, 2007), the third paragraph was: “While commending the Airtel and Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel for organising this novel music festival for the differently abled along with the Rotaract Club of Dr. M.G.R. Janaki College of Arts and Science and Rotaract Club of Government College of Physiotherapy, [Managing Director, The Hindu and president of The Music Academy] Mr. Murali said it was laudable to see that renowned visually challenged violent maestro M. Chandrasekaran had come to be part of this unique event ….” It should have been “visually challenged violin maestro”.

  • In a report “India has the largest pool of human resource: Kakodkar” (City Edition – Mangalore, December 2, 2007, page 3), the name of graduate (and winner of three top awards for academic performance this year) Varun Boriah was misspelt as Varun Boraiah. Mr. Boriah also clarifies that he is now at the University of California, Berkeley, and not at the University of Berkely, as was published. The report was on Anil Kakodkar, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and secretary to the Department of Atomic Energy, delivering the convocation address at the fifth “Annual Convocation of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka”, and not Kartanataka, as was published.

  • The twelfth paragraph in “India rides on Ganguly’s sublime knock” (“Sport”, December 10, 2007) was: “Debutant paceman Ishant Sharma went for runs — the field placements were attacking — but impressed with his fluent run-up, speed and corridor bowling ….” Ishant Sharma made his test debut against Bangladesh on May 25, 2007.
