Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial “A duty that cannot be abdicated” (Dec. 11). It is quite unfortunate that a bill had to be passed for the protection and maintenance of senior citizens. In our country, respecting elders and treating them with dignity have always been considered part of one’s duty. Unfortunately, the materialistic world has affected and changed the attitude of the young towards their parents. Once it comes into effect, the Maintenance of the Welfare of Parents and other Senior Citizens Bill will definitely deter those who discard and humiliate their parents after deriving all materialistic and monetary benefits from them. Vinod Kumar, Thiruvananthapuram That we should have a law to prevent men from beating their wives and driving out their parents does not augur well for our society. N. Dharmeshwaran,Guduvancherry There is need for the creation of an ambience of love and security. Economic freedom deals only with a small aspect of the problem. Filial affection cannot be enforced by law. Only by educating the youth in schools and workplace can the value of caring be instilled in them. K. Panchapagesan, Chennai
