NEW DELHI: The All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has opposed the Bihar government’s “anti-poor, anti-woman” proposal to bring in legislation barring persons having more than two children from contesting the forthcoming local bodies elections. DraconianThe “draconian legislation,” which the government plans to introduce in the ongoing Assembly session, will in effect prevent hundreds of thousands of poor women, specially those belonging to the most deprived Dalit, Adivasi and other sections, from becoming people’s representatives, the AIDWA said. “We hope that better sense will prevail on the JD (U) leadership,” which seemed to be following the lead of its BJP partner in introducing this legislation, said a statement issued by AIDWA president Subhashini Ali and general secretary Sudha Sundararaman. The AIDWA contrasted this with the situation at the time of the last election when the Bihar government took the positive step of reserving 50 per cent seats for women who, as a result, campaigned enthusiastically.
