Development projects in naxal-hit areas reviewed

Special Correspondent

It includes education, road construction

NEW DELHI: In a bid to speed up the socio-economic development in naxal affected areas, the Centre has focussed on 33 districts in eight States to swiftly implement schemes relating to universal education, adult literacy, mid-day meals in schools and road construction.

An Inter-Ministerial Group, set up to review and monitor the implementation of the projects, met here on Tuesday and took up a comprehensive review of the ongoing projects in the districts concerned.

The IMG has as its members senior officials of the rank of joint secretary from a number of Central Ministries such as rural development, education, health and family welfare, panchayati raj, environment and forests, agriculture and tribal affairs.

It is headed by Additional Secretary (anti-naxal cell) in the Union Home Ministry. Tuesday’s meeting was the fifth over the past one year.

Special attention

Official sources in the Home Ministry said the effort was directed towards paying special attention to monitoring the implementation of development projects in 33 districts in a time-bound manner.

Since the initiative would need huge resources, it was decided to concentrate on a limited area first and then take it to other districts.
