JAMMU: The media has to discharge its principal obligation of serving society, particularly in a developing country like India. “The media should reflect the larger picture of society and discharge its duty by focusing on the marginalised section of society which usually does not find space in the media domain,” the Editor-in-Chief, Tribune group of publications, H.K. Dua, told a ‘Meet the Press’ programme at the Press Club here on Tuesday. Accepting the fact that much of the media had become a corporate entity, he said, “the fact cannot be missed that the journalists fraternity has to work under limitations. But even under these limitations one can play an important role in sensitising society on the people who are otherwise less privileged.” Mr. Dua deplored the trends in the electronic media which was resorting to trivialisation and redefining the purpose of the media. “Unnecessary focus on trivial issues and sensationalism is causing harm to the institution.” Noting that Press as an institution had led to national awakening, Mr. Dua said: “The media discourse should not be lopsided. The entire gamut of diversity in the country — be it regional, ethnic, linguistic or religious — has to find space and should be articulated.”
