NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday said the Bharatiya Janata Party’s announcement that L.K. Advani will be its prime ministerial candidate in the next general election was a pre-emptive move. “You don’t suddenly announce a candidate so many months before an election. It is nothing but a pre-emptive move because there is a fear that not only might Narendra Modi try to occupy the position that the “prime minister-in-waiting” has waited for, but that there may be lot of claimants — Rajnath Singh or even the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, if he feels better. All these are preventive tactics,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said. “We are amused at the move. It indicates the insecurity and fear in the camp of the prime minister-in-waiting only to prevent other contenders from staking a claim,” he said. On the Supreme Court’s call for judicial restraint, he said: “Judicial activism and judicial abdication, both are extremes which ought to be avoided. True virtue lies in the middle path. The real challenge is to achieve a harmonious balance.”
