History Congress session from December 14
Staff Reporter
Chennai: A range of political, social, economic and cultural issues are to be discussed at the 14th annual session of the Tamil Nadu History Congress, a forum that fosters historical research.
The department of Indian History at the Madras University will host the session to be held from December 14 – 16 at the Senate House. Member of Parliament E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan will inaugurate the event and K. Veeramani, Chancellor of Periyar Maniyammai University, will deliver the special address.
G. Venkataraman, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu History Congress, said about 500 faculty members, research scholars and students of city colleges are expected to participate.
About 150 research papers, including one on the Sethusamudram project and Adam’s Bridge, would be presented at the conference.
Mr. Venkataraman regretted that several private schools failed to offer history, economics and political sciences as subjects of study at the Higher Secondary level. “Only government schools continue to offer these subjects as options,” he said.
The conference will promote study of local history, encourage interaction among scholars and recommend updating of syllabus in schools and colleges. Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education vice-chairman A. Ramasamy will release a volume of the proceedings of the 13th Congress and Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan will release the conference souvenir.
