“Drivers’ livelihood will be hit”

PUDUKOTTAI: District Co-ordination Committee of Transport Employees’ Association, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, has urged the State Government to withdraw the norms on cancellation of driving licences of bus drivers involved in road accidents.
At a meeting held here on Tuesday, the office-bearers of the Association said that it would affect the livelihood of the drivers.
The Association also wanted Fitness Certificate (FC) to be issued for tourist vehicles used beyond seven years. At present, the FC was not entertained for these vehicles.
Speaking on the occasion, association district president P. R. Kumaravel said that the Transport Department should withdraw the service tax being levied on the vehicles. “It is an indirect tax causing additional financial burden,” he said. The association members staged a dharna in front of the Pudukottai branch of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation in support of these demands. District president of CITU P.Shanmugam and district secretary K. Selvaraj spoke.
