‘Waterway will end flooding in capital’

Thiruvananthapuram: A permanent solution to the flooding in the State capital will be found with the completion of the national waterway, Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran has said.

Inaugurating a seminar ‘Flooding in Thiruvananthapuram: Problems and Solutions’ organised by the Capital Development Council here on Tuesday, the Minister said the national waterway would be completed with the coordination of all departments.

Mr. Premachandran said the Veli and Akkulam lakes would be renovated at a cost of Rs.12 crore. The funds for the renovation had already been sanctioned, he said.

The former DCC president and legislator K. Mohankumar presided over the function. George Mercier, MLA, CITU leader K. Anirudhan, Leader of the Opposition in the Corporation Council Johnson Joseph were among those who spoke at the seminar.

Former Superintending Engineer K. Sivasankaran Nair, presenting a paper at the seminar, suggested various steps to find a permanent solution to the flooding in the State capital.

Mr. Nair said the waste and sand at Uloor, Pattom, Thampanoor, Pazhavangadi and Vanchiyoor canals should be removed to ensure smooth flow of water. The cleaning of these canals should be taken up by the authorities every two years.
