THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran has said the government will take stern action to check the misuse of groundwater resources. Inaugurating a seminar organised by the district office of the Groundwater Department here on Tuesday, he stressed the need to conserve groundwater. The Minister said that only 59 wells had been registered in the district so far. He said the government would amend the groundwater Act based on the recommendations of an expert committee. He said all open wells with pumps above 1.5 HP and tube-wells with pumps above 3 HP were required to be registered with the Ground Water Authority before February 2008. A district-wide registration campaign would be held from December 17 to 22 with the help of local bodies, he added. Chairman of the district panchayat standing committee on health and education K. Rajan Babu presided over the function. Head of the environment division at the Centre for Earth Science Studies A. Ajayakumar Varma delivered the keynote address. Superintending hydrogeologist S. Suresh Mohan, Central Groundwater Board scientist E. Shaji and Groundwater Department Director A. Johnson Andrapper also spoke.
