Police say the gang has been active for over 20 years and an army havildar was leading it BHUBANESWAR: Orissa police on Tuesday claimed to have nabbed a gang of dacoits, most of them were operating in the capital city region for more than 20 years while a former army havildar was leading the gang. City police was looking for the gang who was involved in burglary at Pahala on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on November 15 last. Subsequently, Baikunth Sutar, the kingpin and former army recruit was arrested by on the spot. Addressing a press conference, city Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarat Sahu said four dacoits were arrested during current raids. The dacoits were identified as Madan Kandi, Sanjay Martha, Ramesh Mallick and Adivasi Pradhan. Police seized Rs. 36,000 and sharpened weapons from the dacoits. Baikuntha, a resident of Cuttack’ Chowdwar area, had been involved in a number of cases before. After his army service, the man entered world of crime. He committed his first crime in 1989 and thereafter he was instrumental in forming many gangs in undivided Cuttack district. Interestingly, the criminal had allegedly set up a Brilliant Institute of Information Technology in Cuttack, in which he used to dump all theft computers. Police had conducted raid in 2003 and busted the racket. “Baikunth had a sharp mind. He used to plan all burglaries by surveying prospective places months before. During interrogation, we got the information about other gang members,” Mr. Sahu said.
