BERHAMPUR: Lawyers owing allegiance to all the 10 bar associations in Ganjam district have decided to launch “cease work” agitation from Wednesday seeking establishment of a permanent Bench of the Orissa High Court in Berhampur. The ongoing strike by members of the Ganjam Bar Association in support of the demand reached eighth day on Tuesday.

Plea to President

Expressing solidarity to the Ganjam Bar Association, which is spearheading the agitation, representatives of nine other associations also decided to go on indefinite strike. Lawyers took out a rally in the city and organised a public meeting on SNT Road to garner public support.

The district judge court in the city wore a deserted look as the lawyers did not allow judges and judicial staff to enter the court premises.

Representatives of all the bar associations held a meeting under chairmanship of S.N. Rath, president of the action committee formed to lead the agitation. They passed a resolution urging the President of the country to immediately transfer those judges of the Orissa High Court, who were earlier members of the bar association in Cuttack.

At the emergency meeting, the lawyers alleged that former members of the Cuttack Bar Association, who had become judges of the high court in Cuttack, were opposed to the demands from southern and western parts of the State for establishment of permanent benches of the high court in Berhampur and Sambalpur.

The Ganjam district tax bar association also extended its support to the lawyers. Secretary of the association, anjit Padhi said members of their association would hold demonstrations in front of the income tax and commercial tax offices to express their solidarity.
