Minister asks schools to lay emphasis on science education

BHUBANESWAR: Worried over waning interest on science subject among students, Orissa Government decided to put fresh thrust on activities based on science education in schools of rural pockets.

Addressing a press conference, Minister of State for Science and Technology Sanjeev Kumar Sahoo said Bigyana Digant, a monthly magazine, would be sent to one high school in every gram panchayat (GP) through Postal Department. The State has total 6,234 GPs.

Moreover, the Science and Technology Department would make thorough review of the grants being paid to different schools for conducting Science Fairs in 19 educational districts.

Scholarships

“Surprise checks have been planned by top officials including myself to ensure that grants as well as books sanctioned to schools are properly used,” Mr. Sahoo said.

Secretary N. C. Vasudevan said the State Government would pursue with Centre to set up a Centre of Excellence for Mathematics. “We are also contemplating scholarships for students who would do well in mathematics from Standard V,” Mr. Vasudevan said.

Similarly, the State Government has joined hands with Tata Group to organise Young Astronomy Talent Search (YATS) in six different towns of the State. More than 4,000 schools were requested to send their students.

As many 109 students from Standard 8 to 10 had been selected and they would vie for honours in two-day long Astrology mela beginning here from Wednesday. The fair would culminate on December 13, which coincides with birth anniversary of Samant Chandrasekhar, the legendary astrologer of the State.

A six-member jury would finally select 10 students who would be extended all helps to get special training on astrology.
