BERHAMPUR: A group of 29 peasants are the sufferers in a border dispute between Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. This border dispute is related to the Sarlanda area in Gajapati district adjoining Andhra Pradesh. Few months back the Gajapati district collector had found out that Revenue Department of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh was collecting land revenue from this area under Orissa. The Gajapati district collector, D.V.Swamy wrote to his counterpart in Andhra Pradesh objecting to this collection of land revenue from areas in Gajapati district of Orissa as it was declared to be part of Orissa in 1997. As per the Paralakhemundi tehsil office of Gajapati district there is around 90 acres of government land in Sarlanda area. Out of it 40 acres is being cultivated by 29 peasants of the area. These peasants had received land patta from Andhra Pradesh Revenue Department before 1997. The irony is that they were paying up land revenue to Andhra government till date. Recently the Paralakhemundi tehsil office has issued show cause notices to these peasants regarding non-payment of land revenue to Orissa government. They are yet to get patta for the disputed land they are cultivating from Orissa Government.
