Worker killed, 4 injured in accident at quarry

TAMBARAM: A 47-year-old man was killed and four others were injured when rocks fell on a group of workers at a stone quarry in Tiruneermalai near Pallavaram on Tuesday evening.

The Shankar Nagar police, who are investigating, identified the victim as Anbu of Ariyalur district. The police said blasting of rocks in the stone quarry ended at around 4 p.m. Anbu, along with four other men, was engaged in loading huge chunks of rocks onto a lorry when pieces of rock fell on them from a height of about 100 feet.

Anbu, who was perched on top of the lorry, was injured along with four others – Murugavel (26) of Tambaram, Muthukrishnan (45) of Tirunelveli district, Sakthivel (27) of Ariyalur, and John (23) of Anakaputhur.

The five men were rushed to a private hospital in Tambaram where Anbu was pronounced dead on arrival. The four others were reported to be out of danger, police added.
